Photo Recap: Special proclamations at Laredo City Hall

LAREDO, Texas -- On Monday, May 13, City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas welcomed visitors to City Hall for some very special proclamations.

Organized by SCAN, representatives from various law enforcement agencies, including Customs; Border Patrol; United I.S.D. Police Department; City of Laredo Police Department; Constable Rudy Rodriguez; and Laredo I.S.D. Police Department, joined Mayor Salinas for the Police Officers Memorial Day Proclamation, to honor those peace officers who, through their courageous deeds, have lost their lives or have become disabled in the performance of duty.

Later, representatives from Doctors Hospital, Laredo Medical Center and Laredo Specialty Hospital, joined together with Mayor Salinas to proclaim the week Hospital Week in Laredo.


 Priscilla Salinas, Marketing Director, Laredo Medical Center; Tim Schmidt, CEO, Laredo Medical Center; Rene Lopez, CEO, Doctors Hospital; Mario Rodriguez, CEO, Laredo Specialty Hospital; and Veronica Trevino, Account Executive, KGNS, joined Mayor Salinas for the joint proclamation, to recognize the hard working people that compose our hospitals deserve universal regard and appreciation for keeping our community healthy.

Representatives from all three hospitals join together with Mayor Salinas for a photo immediately after he read the Hospital Week proclamation.

 
Laredo man arrested in midnight bomb threat case

LAREDO, Texas -- On Friday, May 10,  at approximately 12:41 am, Laredo Police received a bomb threat call by Mr. Shrimp Restaurant located at 4402 McPherson Ave.

A male employee reported to police that he was attending a customer who had made some comments to him indicating that some people who were inside the restaurant he didn’t care for.  

The male customer then placed what appears to be a pineapple grenade on the employee's hand as he was taking his order by the parking lot of the business.  The male customer then got his order and left  the area.

Elisa C. Garza sentenced to 18 years for intoxication manslaughter

LAREDO, Texas -- On November 25, 2011 Elisa Christina Garza was driving under the influence of alcohol when she ran a red light and crashed into the vehicle of 19-year-old Derek Ray Treviño at the intersection of Loop 20 and Interstate Highway 35.

Treviño, who worked as a delivery drivery for a Domino's Pizza restaurant, had just delivered his last order of the day and was returning to his employment place when the crashed occurred. He died later at Doctors Hospital from multiple blunt force injuries sustained from the motor vehicle accident.

Garza was charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter, a second degree felony in the state of Texas.

Two arrested in Dollar General break-in case

LAREDO, Texas -- Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza provided photos of the break-in at Dollar General Store located at 3353 E. Clark.

Two suspects have been arrested following a brief investigation by LPD detectives who said they followed a trail of beer leading to the apartment of one of the suspects.

Sheriff's Deputies confiscate cocaine, arrest one

LAREDO, Texas -- The Webb County Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit on Tuesday intercepted cocaine while patrolling the streets in central Laredo.

At approximately 7:15 pm, deputies of the Webb County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit approached a suspicious vehicle at the 300 Block of Taylor. As deputies approached the vehicle, they identified the driver as Ramiro Rodriguez, 36.  Rodriguez displayed a nervous behavior, which alerted deputies. During the investigation deputies found 11 clear plastic baggies containing 4.5 grams of cocaine inside the vehicle.   The cocaine has an estimated street value of $300.00.

Sheriff Cuellar hosts Mother's Day Crime Prevention Program

LAREDO, Texas -- On Thursday, Sheriff Martin Cuellar hosted a Mother’s Day Crime Prevention Event for the elderly citizens of Webb County at the Casa Blanca Ballroom.  

Over 400 citizens in this age demographic gathered to receive valuable safety information.   Joining Sheriff Cuellar in his efforts in keeping this special group of citizen’s safe were invited guest speakers from different agencies.  

Fire prevention and safety tips were provided by the Webb County Fire Department and tips on reporting crime were made available by Laredo Crime Stoppers.

Sheriff Cuellar and his guests not only shared crime prevention tips, but also had the opportunity to celebrate the upcoming Mother’s Day festivities.

 
Sheriff's correctional offficers intercept contraband at Co. jail

LAREDO, Texas -- Webb County Sheriff’s Correctional Officers intercepted contraband in two separate incidents and seized narcotics at the Webb County Jail.
                                                                             
In the first incident on Saturday, at approximately 6:30 pm, vigilant Correctional Officers assigned to the women’s quarters intercepted a female inmate attempting to conceal a plastic baggie containing pills.  Officers who were alerted to the contraband conducted a search of the female inmate. During the search she admitted that she was hiding the contraband.   Inmate Christy Alvarado, 26, had turned herself into authorities after being wanted on 3 capias arrest warrants.  In addition to the original charges of theft and credit card abuse, Alvarado was additionally charged with Prohibited Substance in a Correctional Facility a third degree felony.   In total 115 pills of Hydrocodone and 4 ½ pills of Alprozolom were seized from inmate Alvarado.

Cientos apoyan a pre-candidato Jaime Velasquez en venta de platillos

LAREDO, Texas -- Jaime Velasquez, pre-candidato al puesto de Tesorero del Condado de Webb, realizó  con mucho éxito una venta de platillos en beneficio a su campaña política, anticipando que será un aspirante serio y fuerte en la próxima contienda electoral.

Familiares y amigos acompañaron a Velasquez, con la venta de cientos de platillos a sus simpatizantes de Webb que acudieron para manifestarle su apoyo.

En una breve entrevista con Velasquez, él dijo que busca dar una representación humilde, dedicada y transparente a los pagadores de impuestos.

Jaime Velasquez busca quitarle el puesto a Delia Perales quien actualmente trabaja como tesorera del condado.

 
City of Laredo donates patrol car to Benavides Police Department

Benavides Police Department Laredo Donation

LAREDO, Texas -- Friday morning the City of Laredo, Chief Ray Garner and the Laredo Police Department donated a used police cruiser to the City of Benavides Police Department’s Chief, Jose Daniel Garza, in order to better patrol presence in Benavides, Texas.

With a population of 1,300 people and a police department of 2 officers (the Chief is one of the two) the young growing city asked for assistance from the Laredo Police Department and asked if LPD had any equipment or even a patrol car they could get handed down to them. The request has been in the works since January 2013 and the item recently went before the city council and was approved.

22-year-old man arrested for hosting alcohol parties with minors

LAREDO, Texas - At 1:23 am on Saturday April 27, 2013, LPD received several calls about a large party taking place at 3019 Silhouette Drive.

The callers stated that there was a large party and that several minor could be seen drinking. Officers converged on the neighborhood and broke up the party.  

The location where the party was taking place was a pay to enter party where a cover charge was taking place in order to enter and consume alcoholic beverages.
